Deposition

A statement under oath taken in connection with an official court proceeding.

For example, let’s pretend you've filed a negligence claim against a crabby old lady who totaled your car by running a red light. Your lawyer would subpoena witnesses who saw the act to appear for depositions—and take their statements under oath in the presence of a court reporter. Essentially, you are "depositing" nuggets of information upon which lawyers stand in their efforts to sue you.

So, um, enjoy that process. Turn head. Cough.
