calculating measures of central tendency for a data set manually a la shmoop [Little girl looking at math work]

00:09

all right well say you've got a bunch of data and you want to make sense of it

00:12

all not a bad way to handle data well chances are you've got a bunch of

00:16

numbers ranging from some high point to some low point and you want to know what

00:20

those numbers mean get it what's the best way to get a handle on it well you [Boy looking for books]

00:25

have a couple of options well first you can take the mean or

00:28

average of those numbers yeah second ways to find the median middle set well

00:35

well the first method will give you a precise average by taking every piece of

00:39

data into account it can be a bit skewed if there were a couple of outliers [Girl trying to arrange data]

00:43

numbers that were way higher or lower than all the rest in that case you may

00:48

be better off going with the median which simply takes the middle number of

00:52

data eliminates the highest and lowest figures on either side of it like that

00:56

depending on what you're looking for you may also be

01:00

interested in finding the mode which is just the number that appears most often

01:06

all right which is why we always order our apple pie [Woman ordering apple pie]
