Park maintenance isn't just a walk in the... well, you know where we're going with this.
Hey, look: this is math that you're actually going to use in real life. We promise, it'll come in handy someday.
Math 3: How Should I Design My Park? 7 Views

Description:
Designing the perfect park is all about considering the needs of potential visitors. All we're saying is that if you stick it next to a senior center, you probably won't be needing a halfpipe.

Ah, designers… those professional imaginers, who follow their ideas wherever they lead, [Designer drawing a picture on a piece of paper]

to make whatever they want.

…Right?
- 00:21
Eh, not exactly. [Builder telling a designer that the design is too fancy]

Unfortunately, reality's not as glamorous.

Generally designers have to work within a bunch of preset limits, and design something
- 00:29
that balances the needs and desires of all sorts of people.
- 00:32
And sometimes these people can be a bit bossy and annoying, which is never that much fun. [Designer's boss barking instructions]
- 00:37
So without further ado, let's get a sample of this process, as we attempt to design a
- 00:41
park.
- 00:42
Our goal is to design a park that includes some combination of four different features:
- 00:45
a field…
- 00:46
…a garden…
- 00:47
…a playground… [different features of a park]
- 00:48
…and a recreation area.
- 00:50
The challenge is getting them all in there, and still making sure that it feels like a
- 00:54
nice, comfortable park. [People cycling through a park and people sitting on the grass]
- 00:56
For example, we probably don't want to stick a baseball field right next to a garden.
- 01:00
If you're picking tomatoes, you're probably not in the mood to be bonked in the head by [Woman hit by a baseball while picking tomatoes]
- 01:03
a fly ball.
- 01:04
Fields are pretty easy to design.
- 01:06
After all, they're mostly just big empty spaces…
- 01:08
…where people can have picnics…
- 01:10
…fly kites…
- 01:11
…or just relax. [People flying kites and laying down on a park field]
- 01:12
As long as there's a lot of open space, lots of grass, and no huge pits of snakes, your
- 01:17
field's gonna be a-okay.
- 01:19
When it comes to gardens, we've got lots of choices.
- 01:21
We could stick with a small, simple garden…
- 01:23
…or make a huge botanical garden, with ponds, fountains, and greenhouses. [Large botanical garden with a pond and trees]
- 01:28
All we have to do is make sure we don't put any flowerbeds in the ponds.
- 01:32
It's tough to enjoy flowers when they're six feet underwater. [Girl unhappy with the under water flower beds]
- 01:36
Playgrounds also give us a lot of choices.
- 01:38
We could go with a humble swing set…
- 01:39
…or go wild with a sprawling, gigantic playground with slides, a jungle gym, the works.[Child whizzing down a slide in a park jungle gym]
- 01:44
Or, if we really just like swings, which…who doesn’t…maybe just a hundred swings.
- 01:50
Swing-fans will certainly thank you. [Child standing up on a swing in a park]
- 01:53
With recreation areas, we've also got a crazy amount of choice.
- 01:56
There are different recreation areas for different sports, from tennis courts for tennis…
- 02:00
…basketball courts for basketball… [Boys playing basketball]
- 02:02
…baseball fields for baseball… [Little children playing baseball]
- 02:04
…and even hockey rinks for hockey.
- 02:07
Just don't try to put them all in the exact same space.
- 02:09
As important as ice is for hockey, it doesn't really help much when trying to play most
- 02:13
other sports.
- 02:14
But it is kinda funny to watch….heh…. [People falling over playing basketball on a hockey ice rink]
