She tells him he’s been watching too many of those home makeover shows on HGTV…
- 00:29
But Cecil begs some more, and eventually she relents on one condition…
- 00:32
He can redo the room, but Cecil has to draw a floor plan of how he wants it before they
- 00:37
move any furniture.
- 00:38
No worries…says Cecil. I got this. [Cecil with his thumbs up]
- 00:40
First, he measures the dimensions of his room, which is 10 and 1/8 feet by 12 feet.
- 00:46
He also measures all the furniture, like his twin bed, beanbag chair, and his shelf
- 00:50
full of baby toys.
- 00:51
All right, now that he’s got the dimensions recorded, it’s time to draw the floor plan.
- 00:54
Of course, he can’t use the exact dimensions he’s recorded to draw the floor plan, though.
- 00:58
Then the floor plan would be the exact same size as the room.
- 01:00
Cecil knows that he’s going to shrink the dimensions for his floor plan, drawing it all to a consistent scale.
- 01:05
He decides the easiest thing to do would be to make 1 inch = 1 foot.
- 01:09
That is one of those happy times in life where taking the easiest road is a-okay. [Sign shows 'easy road ahead' and a tick appears]
- 01:13
So Cecil starts to draw the rectangular shape of his bedroom, where each foot is drawn as
- 01:17
one inch on the paper.
- 01:18
So since the room is 10 and 1/8 feet long, he draws it as 10 and 1/8 inches on the paper.
- 01:24
No sweat…and no blood or tears either.
- 01:26
Then Cecil remembers that he’d better measure all the windows and doors too.
- 01:30
If he doesn’t, his bed might end up blocking the door…
- 01:32
Or his shelf might end up blocking the window…
- 01:35
And then how would he sneak out at night to hang with his friends? [Cecil's friends looking through a blocked window]
- 01:38
Oh…sorry, Cecil…didn’t mean to sell you out like that.
- 01:40
Awesome, now Cecil has an accurate and detailed floor plan that shows the dimensions of his
- 01:45
room to scale.
- 01:46
So next, he’s gotta figure out how he wants to arrange his furniture.
- 01:48
He can see what will fit with the amazing magic of a ruler, a pencil, and paper.
- 01:52
And so, after hours of sketching, erasing, and moving things around, he finally comes
- 01:56
up with a spanking new floor plan for his room.
- 01:58
He shows his Mom, and she’s impressed. [Cecil has the floor plan in his hand and his mum gives the thumbs up]
- 02:01
She tells him he has proven his responsibility and that, at long last, he’s turning into
- 02:05
an adult.
- 02:06
The day has finally come when he can get rid of the baby elephant wallpaper and pick any [Cecil and his mum walk into a hardware store]
- 02:10
new motif he wants.
- 02:11
He says…Cool.
- 02:12
How ‘bout shrunken heads?
