We’re told from a young age that reading is a big deal. [Little girl reading a book with teddy bears]
- 00:16
But…why?
- 00:18
Is it…just important so we know when a floor is wet?
- 00:21
Eh, not so much.

There are actually a few reasons. [Coop giving reasons why to read]
- 00:24
First of all, we read to get information.
- 00:26
Books that are jam-packed with information are usually called nonfiction—and each one
- 00:30
teaches us about a particular topic.
- 00:32
We also read to have fun and enjoy.
- 00:35
Some books are written purely to entertain us.
- 00:37
These are usually fiction books.
- 00:38
Yeah…they’re like movies on paper, if you want to think of them that way. [Boy wearing 3D glasses reading a book]
- 00:41
Without all the annoying previews.
- 00:43
We read to learn new vocabulary, and to be introduced to new opinions.
- 00:47
Not every writer thinks the same way, and by reading their books, we can learn about [Books angrily staring at each other]
- 00:51
their viewpoints.
- 00:52
Even if some of those viewpoints cause us to go prematurely bald…
- 00:55
Now, how do you choose a good book to read?
- 00:58
There are a few questions you can ask yourself when mulling over your next big reading project. [Girl deciding which book to read in a library]
- 01:02
First, why do you want to read this book?
- 01:05
Does it cover a topic you want to learn more about?
- 01:07
Next, does this book interest you? [Coop discussing considerations for what to read]
- 01:09
If you love learning about dinosaurs but the book in front of you is about cats, maybe
- 01:12
you need to keep looking.
- 01:14
Because…the “fluffosaurus”? [Fluffosaurus appears in a forest]
- 01:15
Not a real thing.
- 01:16
Next…do you understand the book?
- 01:18
Does it make sense when you try to read it?
- 01:20
It’s hard to get through a whole story where you don’t really understand the story or
- 01:24
what’s going on.
- 01:25
Just check out these poor souls who accidentally wandered into a lecture on quantum theory. [Students wearing swimming gear appear in a lecture room]
- 01:29
Yeah…no one deserves to look that lost.
- 01:31
Finally, do you know most of the words?
- 01:33
If you can’t pronounce or decode most of the words in a book, reading it will definitely
- 01:38
be a struggle.
- 01:39
Unless there are some pretty pictures to distract you.
- 01:41
Hmm…don’t know what calcification is, but check out that colorful diagram of the [Girl reading a book and image of kidney appears on a page]

human kidney!
